News’N Notes Messiah Lutheran School-Independence, MO -- May 15, 2008 BIKE-A-THON is Saturday, May 17th, 9:00-12:00, at the Pop Warner football fields, just north of R.D. Mize Road on Necessary Road. JOYFUL SINGERS CHOIR will sing at the 8:00 service on Sunday, May 18th. GRADUATION for Kindergarten and 8th grade will be Monday, May 19th, 7:00, in the church. TEACHER WORK DAY Thursday, May 22nd – school will be
dismissed at 1:00. LAST DAY OF SCHOOL for the 2007-2008 school year will be Friday, May 23rd. Closing chapel service will begin at 8:45. School will be dismissed at 11:30. BILLING IS ATTACHED for those who still owe fees. ALL FEES must be paid by May 21st in order for students to receive report cards or have records transferred. If you owe cafeteria fees, that is attached also. If you have a negative balance, please make sure this is paid immediately. If there is a positive balance in the account at the end of the school year, and the balance is under $5.00, it will be carried over to the next school year unless a refund is requested. If there is a positive balance over $5.00, a check will be mailed to you after the end of the school year. ROYALS PERFECT ATTENDANCE AWARDS go to Katherine, Jaycee, and Martha. In order for students to receive perfect attendance awards, they could not be absent, tardy, or gone during any part of the school day. Congratulations to these students for receiving free Royals tickets. LOST AND FOUND items not claimed before the end of the school year will be put in the donation box. ACHIEVEMENT TEST RESULTS are back and parents may pick up the results in the school office. Students in grades 2-8 took achievement tests. CHAPEL next week will be the closing service on May 23rd. There will not be a chapel service on May 21st. SPORTS INTENT FORMS for the 2008-09 school year were sent home this week with students in grades 3-7. Please fill these out and return to the school office. (Please add soccer and/or volleyball.) THANK YOU FROM PTL to everyone who participated and helped with the 50’s carnival/sock hoop last Friday. A special thanks goes out to all who helped with set-up, clean-up, procurement, food service, advertising (our posters were great!), and organizing the entire event. A successful carnival takes much more than a few people – it requires many people coming together with a willingness to help. Parents, teachers, and students – thank you!!! Congratulations to our raffle winners: Dave Mudd, Suzanne Wikle, and Wayne Diveley. Thanks from all of us to Melissa and Susan for pulling all of this together! TRACK: Hope Invitational 5th/6th grade girls took 1st for “overall points.” 5th/6th grade girls took 1st for “highest number of points per athlete.” 11 – 1st place ribbons 11 – 2nd place ribbons 9 – 3rd place ribbons 6 – 4th place ribbons 5 – 5th place ribbons 11 – 6th place ribbons All in all, 54 ribbons for a total of 293 points. Michayla Downey broke a track record for javelin throw with a distance of 75’-3” (the old record was 74’-6 ½”). Cross Country: 5th grade and under girls took 1st Junior high girls (6th, 7th & 8th) took 1st Top 3 elementary school – Martha Sanchez, Kirsten Robertson, Joelle Hick Top 3 junior high – Kelsey Robertson, Aubrey Becker, Mary Horn Lutheran High (with 16 schools participating) 5th grade girls took 2nd in their division 6th grade girls took 1st in their division 7 – 1st place ribbons 11 – 2nd place ribbons 11 – 3rd place ribbons 24 – 4th place ribbons 20 – 5th place ribbons 9 – 6th place ribbons 72 ribbons for a total of 277 points Please turn in track uniforms to the school office as soon as possible. GOLF TOURNAMENT: Volunteers and golfers are needed to make the golf tournament a success. There is a volunteer sign-up on the bulletin board outside the office. The golf tournament is June 6th at WinterStone Golf Course. If you will be bringing a team, please let Jill know as soon as possible. VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL will be held at Messiah Lutheran Church July 14-18, 8:30-11:30 AM. All children who are three years old through those going into 6th grade in the fall are invited. Attached you will find enrollment forms. This year’s theme is “Power Lab – Discovering Jesus’ Miraculous Power.” If you would be able to help out at VBS, please contact Ken. GARAGE SALE will be held June 11th-14th. You can bring donations to the gym beginning next week. If you would be available to assist with the garage sale, please contact the school office. Proceeds will be used to update some office equipment.
SANTA-CALI-GON DAYS RUN: We are wanting to start getting a count of who will be able to help with the Santa-Cali-Gon Days Run. Please let us know if you will be willing to help. You will be provided a T-shirt for your time. The run is August 30, 2008, beginning at 7:00 AM. It starts at Messiah and goes around the square. Volunteers are needed for course monitors, water stations, pancake breakfast, start/finish line, registration, and awards. Please let us know where you would be willing to volunteer by returning this to the school office.
